So, whats been going on that has prevented me from blogging in so long you ask? Well, as before when I've taken long breaks - a mixture of happiness and being just too busy. Tonight I got home at 6.30 and as I'm unable to work out in the lead up to the big HALF on Sunday I'm kinda like heck, what do I do for the next 5 hours until it's time to sleep?? I feel restless not being active - that IS my chill out time.
Well let's look at one thing at a time...
Love
Love is good, more than good, excellent! 9 months into being "home" and 9 months of bliss with my man. Who'd have thought that years of confusion could turn into something so wonderful. We've been to see the mortgage advisor and in all honesty, it didn't go so well. With me on the lowest salary I've had since before university and him being self employed its hard to get the money we know we could afford to borrow. BUT we're working at it. With him doing an extra 2 hours a day and me working evenings and weekends we are pulling in more money and working together to build up our deposit. We will go for another appointment at the end of the tax year, at that point we will go with what we have and find our home. Be it the "dream" home or not, it will be ours.
Work
Work. My God, never did I imagine that you could actually get out of work in the morning without a struggle. I love my company. For the last 4 weeks I have covered someones role who is more senior than mine (same as the role I applied for and didn't get) and enjoyed every second of feeling stressed, using my brain and being tired. Now she is back, I just keep pushing on and on with taking more responsibilities wherever possible, coming up with ideas, taking on new projects and it's being noticed. I will get there, I've made my mark. Alongside the everyday work, I am furthering my dream role at the company - to be on air. I have been noticed. I'm doing on air links, learning how to use adobe, creating podcasts, managing focus groups, I even have my own commercial to raise awareness of the money I am raising for charity by running the half marathon. I am praying so so hard that I get a pay rise when I have my 6 month review. Please, if more than anything, I deserve it because I have worked so bloody hard. and, more importantly I love it.
Play
Running, running and more running. Looking forward to a trip to Foxhills Spa with the boy (my reward from my line manager for working so hard to cover my colleagues work), a holiday to Norway to visit A&F, weddings (not mine - ha!), and concerts a plenty over the summer - 3 so far - Scouting For Girls (who I happened to meet at work just the other day - another perk of the job), BEP (with Cheryl Cole supporting) and FOTC. Awesome. Fighting the resistance of comparing my relatively normal weekends to the road trips we use to take in Malaysia but I need to accept, I am here now and this is how life is. But I can handle it - I've never felt so normal, so content and so happy.
Other stuff...
There's been some lows... some very very lows. Finding out my step mum was pregnant and that the baby had died whilst still growing inside her and therefore losing my baby brother was probably most hard (of course that is the abbreviated version). The growing desire (and hassle) to meet my little half sister who lives a stone throw away from me and living at home and so very desperate to live with my love. All challenging and some big changes in my future to follow no doubt. Oh and did I mention I have managed 77 days with no alcohol - insane! I know. 3 months is up on the 1st April - bring on the G&T!
OK, so there you have it... a little summary from me to you. It felt quite nice to share with you. Til next time, I'll try and not leave it quite so long this time...

Slow and Steady Wins The Race???
Forgot to mention - next half marathon is in 8 weeks. Just started properly training last week and managed 22km over the course of the week. I feel SO unfit! I guess I haven't really worked hard at running since the last one back in September. Mada and I are running it together. Let's pray I can keep up with him - !!

Update
Isn't it funny that when I was unhappy I sometimes blogged up to 3 times a day, no I have left it days, weeks since I last wrote an entry! I guess that says something in itself :o)
Tomorrow Grandma turns 90 and the whole family are heading down to Dorset to stay in a huge cottage to celebrate over a long weekend. I can't wait. I spent many hours working on a "This Is Your Life" DVD which I finally finished last night at about midnight (by the time i got to bed) and was up at 5am to head to work for the Breakfast Show this morning.
Never thought I'd look forward at getting up for work at 5am and voluntarily too.
Things just get better and better.
Just 5 more months to go and then we'll be at the bank trying to see what sort of mortgage we can get. We've set ourselves the date of March 2010. Time to work hard, save hard and party only a little bit ;o)
Last week I ran a cross-country 10K race for a charity called CHASE. We raised about £600+ for terminally ill children who stay at this hospice. I think I mentioned it before. The weather was diabolical and we literally were running in mud up to our ankles. I've got really bad shin splints but they're easing today. All for a good cause for children far worse off than me, so I won't complain. It was a real challenge over all.
That's all for now, must get back to the day job :o)

Part Time Blogger
So sue me, I haven't blogged in a week! I guess I've just been so caught up with ensuring my life is in tip-top shape before I start my new job NEXT WEEK that I got a little distracted!
Quite a lot to update you on, but I don't really have the patience to sit and write for ages so I'm gonna put it all in a little summary. Lazy - I know!
- COLDPLAY. We went to the Viva La Vida gig on Saturday night. Would have been excellent (and nearly was) but the heavens opened about 2 minutes before Coldplay started and we got absolutely soaked! Ruining my brand new £150 leather jacket (which I subsequently returned and got an exchange on - phew!). Saying that, despite being freezing cold and wet, random piss being chucked on us (don't ask) and being much further back than we would have liked, Coldplay were bloody fantastic and we had an amazing time. I kept thinking back to their last gig we went to in 2005 when everything was all so different... who would have thought what I would have been through in these last 4 years. Unbelievable. It was quite funny when Chris Martin decided that all 70,000 of us would perform an X Factor audition for Simon Cowell :o) I posted the video on FB and will try and import it onto my blog later. Saying that, I'm sure someone will have posted a better quality version on You Tube.
OK, I was right, here you go!
A few days before that, the boyfriend and I went to see Chelsea play at Standford Bridge. We had really good seats and I could actually here the players shouting at each other. It was really fun being there together, kinda like a momentous occasion in my eyes... I was so thankful that they (*cough* sorry "WE") won as I was worried I'd be a bad omen... turns out Chelsea have won every premiership game so far this season, so although I don't like to say it aloud, perhaps I am the Boy's lucky charm (now I've said that they're bound to lose!!). I'd like to go and see some more games, it was really fun!
Sunday will be the half marathon which feels like it's been a long time coming. I've been looking forward to it so much and trained so much harder than I have for any run before (let us not forget that I have been unemployed for 4 months - how could we forget!). I am excited although my Sister doesn't really seem that up for it anymore and it's kinda put an edge on the whole thing. Hopefully she will buck up on the day and we'll have a blast. The boyfriend wants to come and support me, which really means a lot to me.. I remember all those years ago cheering him on in his Triathlon so it's real nice that he is coming to support me. I want to make him proud :o)
And of course Monday brings the new job :o) I'm nervous and excited all in one. Have bought two new outfits and hope to buy a couple more items this week before I start - I'm sure there will be plenty of blogs to come about that so watch this space!
In between all of the above, I've been sporting my "Team Cheryl" T shirt courtesy of www.boohoo.com been taking care of my fabulous Gran with yummy lunches and trips to the theatre, and generally prancing about.
I can't wait for next week - be it good or bad, it's the new start that I'm ready to take on.

Runners
On Saturday the boy and i ventured into the dark depths of Woking to find a well known running shop called Sweatshop. Seeing as I have been suffering from severe blisters on the soles of my feet lately, I have been getting kinda anxious, seeing as the next half marathon is only some 3 weeks away.
I was really, really impressed with their customer service. The gent that served me first looked at my trainers, then my posture, the curve of my feet, the way I walked and the way I ran. From that he was able to tell me if my feet roll when I run, if they turn in/ out, if I'm well balanced etc and then choose a preferable trainer for me from there.
He actually said the trainers I wear at the moment are quite good, but better for short distances (more like 5-10K runs) and that for longer distances I needed more support. He suggested the Adistar Ride (which I tried) and another few brands.
The Adistar Ride's were amazingly padded, supporting and bulky, I feel like they'd be good to run in. But in all honesty he told me the reason behind my blisters may be that the socks I'm wearing are not allowing my feet to breathe enough and therefore causing blisters. So instead of paying 95 squid on some new runners I choose the 9 pound socks and gave them a whirl yesterday - I could actually feel the difference.
I was really impressed that the guy didn't try and sell me trainers to make commission but more so, gave honest, friendly advice. All the same, I'm convinced I need new runners now and seeing as we found them on line for 80, I may just buy them anyway. I'm allowed to treat myself as yesterday I counted up all my foreign currencies I had from my travels and it came to over 100 quid! So technically, its some free money I didn't know I had.. so i may order them online this afternoon.

Train & Tan???
For many men and women across the UK, summertime is about getting a summer tan. Some use sunbeds, others fake tan, occasionally spray-on or fake bake, but for me, I like the good old fashioned UVA infested sun.
Despite being back for nearly 9 weeks I haven't actually had the opportunity to lie in the sun. Firstly being that we haven't really had much of a summer yet, but secondly, on the days when we do, I seem to be recklessly searching the world of the Internet for jobs and feeling discouraged and crappy and spending the last few hours of daylight in the gym pumping out my aggression and frustration.
However, to my disbelief I noticed something rather odd and somewhat horrifying this morning. Whilst moisturising those hard-to-reach bits of my back, I glanced over my shoulder into the mirror to ensure it was all rubbed in and suddenly, glaring back at me were the most hideous tan lines that ever graced planet earth!
No, they weren't streaks of orange, or bright red burnt bits, they were nothing less than my sports bra strap marks THICK and criss-crossed across my upper back. Not. Sexy. HOW in God's name has this happened??
Well, as I say, despite the lack of glorious sunshine, come rain or shine (mostly drizzle/ cloud) I venture out with my Sister once weekly (sometimes twice) for a long run which usually exceeds 1 hour. So, over the last 9 weeks I have obviously gained some sort of "natural glow" (you might call it) from being in the day light and not cooped up in an office (OK, OK, we all know I don't work in an office) OR dingy house.
Whilst of course I am happy that I still have a warm sunny look to my skin i am really not a fan of the big, fat and somewhat lesbianesque strap marks on my back. It looks ridiculous and is only going to become more prominent the more i train for this dam half marathon (remind me again why I run)?
Now, if Nike or Lululemon designed a strapless sports bra then we'd be talking. Hhhmmm, new career idea?
Maybe not.

I'm on KRAC
I meant to write about this sooner, but didn't get round to it, which is pretty lame really considering I'm unemployed (yes, still).
To keep me occupied, to spend time with friends and improve my training plan for the half marathon in September I set up a running club with my friends.
On Saturday I managed to rally up 6 of the 12 "members" and we did the 5 mile course around Virginia Waters. It really was fun.
My boy and billy went ahead, with Shrub and I following behind and Butdunc and her man shortly after us. Butdunc's other half carried a video camera around most of the way to record us "in action" - haha can't wait to see how that came out!
Shrub and I beat our personal best by 1min 30, completing the 5 miles in 38.30 mins. The boys beat us by 6 mins and Butdunc and her other half followed shortly behind.
Afterwards we went for a fantastic brunch at this really quaint/ semi posh cafe in Sunningdale. I had a bagel with scrambled egg, avocado and roasted peppers - it was delicious!
I had so much fun. It felt good to do something "normal" with friends, it made me feel settled in my life again. I hope we can all go again soon, I'm gonna push for this Sunday... but we'll see the reaction ;)
On the up, Mada has agreed to do the New York Marathon (Nov 2010) with me. After going on and on about wanting to go to NY and not being able to afford it this year, we're gonna try and kill 2 birds with one stone next year - how utterly awesome???

I got da fever
Oh my gawd, i forgot about hay fever. Hay fever sucks. I have been up for 1 hour and 15 minutes and have sneezed no less than 23 times. I am not exaggerating. That is an exact number. I am taking Piriton which was helping, however, makes you drowsy and advises you to avoid alcohol. Went for dinner with ButDunc last night and ended up getting absolutely shit faced on just half a bottle of wine. HORRIFIC. I'm blaming it on jet lag (still???) and the Piriton. I'm now trying this "hay wax" which is a balm you rub on the inside of your nose to stop irritation. About to go for a 15K (god help me) run with my sister over at Virginia Waters, hope the medication kicks in, in time. Otherwise it's gonna be a messy run!

I'll beat the crap out of you
My gym buddy and i met last night to do circuit training last night. We also did kickboxing and man, it was awesome! I absolutely loved beating the shit out of his (i have no idea what the professional name for these are) "glove guards" with big fat boxing gloves on.
He taught me three routines and it was awesome to really get some aggression out and my god, it is SUCH a cardiac workout too, I was sweating like a biatch.
My shrub wants me to take up street dancing with her when I get back. There is a weekly class in Reading which only costs £4.50 a week (for my Malaysian followers, that is incredibly reasonable).
I said I'd start but I'm thinking I'd also like to take up kickboxing too - alongside running. Haha. Maybe I won't get a job, maybe I'll just be a tai tai (minus the husband).
My body aches like hell today - love it.

Run to The Beat

I will be entering this race alongside my Shrub on the 27th September this year.
Live bands and recorded music will be played around the 13.1 mile/ 21.2 km (half marathon) track. The race starts at the O2 and goes all around greenwich, ending back at the O2 arena.
I think it's going to be a really fun event and I'm looking forward to crossing the finish line with a friend - that will be a first!
We're going to start training at the running course around Virginia Waters, once I'm back in the UK, every Saturday - followed by Pub Grub - who could ask for more?

New Balance, Pacesetters 15KM 2009
Event: New Balance Pacesetters 15KM 2009
Venue: Tapak A, Lake Gardens, Kuala Lumpur
Date: 17 May 2009
Time 7.00am
Distance: 15KM
Shoe: adidas adizero
Well, well, well, what a pleasant surprise the Pacesetters run turned out to be!
After sleeping through my first alarm but woken up by the 2nd and 3rd I crawled out of bed a 4.45am and took a quick shower, got dressed and made myself a banana, orange, pineapple, strawberry (and a few m&m's) smoothie. Chugged down a bottle of water, an ibuprofen and an Imodium and headed down to the Lake Gardens where the race was held.
I was glad i got there early as I managed to secure a decent parking space and limber up by my car, apply shit loads of deep heat to my knees, back of thighs and ankles before heading down to the meeting point. Over the speakers played some pumping music to get everyone awake and the DJ informed us that there were 1800 runners. It kinda made me laugh after the 50,000 we had in the Singapore half marathon.
I got talking to a few randoms but couldn't find the people from my gym who were competing which was a bit of a shame - maybe they were chicken shit and didn't turn up - i doubt it! But I don't run with my phone so I couldn't call to check. Oh well. Wasn't really that bothered.
Initially i felt like it was all a bit disorganised, the men were to set off at 7.00 and then the women to follow at 7.15. Whilst they were nearly set to go, there were still people legging it to the start line and on the race track! As the runners set off i noticed this old man (probably in his late 60's-early 70's maybe older??) running barefoot. And I thought to myself how stupid we must all seem to him with our designer Nike and Adidas (I'm still in the legendry AdiZero's) trainers. Oh, and of course New Balance trainers (seeing as the race was sponsored by them!)
Eventually the gun went off and the track was clear, then us ladies approached the start line. At this point i really needed to pee. Having taken a poop in the squat toilet (dam nerves) i was already traumatised by having to do that and I knew i didn't have time to go again so hoped it would just sort of... disappear during the run, which it did do after about 30 grueling minutes. The gun went off and I crossed the chip counter about 30 seconds after. Out of the 1800 runners i reckon only a few hundred were women.
As we made headway we took an immediate (but gradual) up hill approach - fuckers. The first 20 minutes were really tough, I always hate the first 20, after that I tend to zone out and my mind gets focused and I just imagine I'm Paula Radcliff :) at 35 mins i reached the first water station so i was really on target time (5K in). I was disappointed that they didn't have any isotonic drinks (i.e 100 plus). I hated that dam drink all those months back when I first started competing, but now i can't get enough of it. So I just downed a cup of luke warm water whilst keeping on the move.
By this point my right knee was starting to ache (around the outside) and my left ankle felt tender. This discomfort was quickly taken away by the usual (and i really don't know why it's always the right foot) pins and needles, in my right foot. This went on for nearly half an hour. The only way to get rid of it is to run it off. Unfortunately it can be quite damaging and uncomfy as you can't tell how much pressure you're putting on the foot.
During the course of the first hour i was pretty much OK. I'd been following this really (hot) and fit runner thinking that I aspired to be her, she kept getting ahead of me and then I would find myself taking over her. I wonder if she was following me too, or, pace setting herself against me (love it when people do that). Then to my surprise, I suddenly found myself creeping up behind the shoeless man, hobbling along... first of all i realised that not only was i overtaking this man but that I had also caught up with a lot of the men. Which meant I had caught up 15 minutes of running time. I really am fitter than i give myself credit for. But then again, I guess even a 5 year old could overtake a shoeless man. Still i was beating a lot of men - yay! haha suckers.
Gradually the hills became more and more intense and at one point i was so close to falling into a walk that i literally had to do a few hops to build up my speed again. It was very, very hard at that point. Although, I soon got my enthusiasm back when a stupid song came on my I Pod that Bombie had told me to upload.. (my neck.. my back.. my pu**y and my crack...hahaha) I smiled and "cracked" on :P
By 1hr 15 i was pretty certain I was gonna finish the race well within my 2 hour target which I had given myself. I had passed the last water station and ran down the highway. There had been people standing with deep heat in their hands (i could have kissed them) as I smeared it all down the backs of my legs and around my knees and felt the icey blast down my legs. I wiped the beads of sweat from my upper lip and of course, realised i still had traces of deep heat on my hand. It was... refreshing... haha.
By this point the road was on a downhill trend and despite the pressure to my knee joints i bolted along until i reached the flat plain and then literally had about a 1km sprint, it was really enjoyable. As I approached the Lake Gardens i realised I was probably on my last km and looked down at my watch. If I kept a good speed I'd make it by 1hr 45 mins. I flicked my I pod on max volume and bolted fast around the last km... reaching the finish line with arms flung in the air and with a big grin for the cameras (never forget to camwhore) ;)
1 hr 42. Sweet!
So yes, overall, I have to say, that the race (endurance wise) was nearly... easy, but if I'm totally honest, I could have gone on for another 6k and completed a half marathon. I really wasn't that exhausted in all honesty. I mean, yeh sure, it was hard, the up hill especially but i was really focused yesterday and I think that's what pulled me through. I guess, given that I haven't been so mentally stressed and have been taking it easier these days I was able to perform better, believe it or not.
Today I can definitely feel the tears and will try and get down the gym tonight to try a light jog to help heal the tears. Saying that, I'm extremely tired this morning and so it may have to wait until tomorrow (they advise a recovery run 24-72 hours after a major race).
Anyway, I'm really glad i decided to do it, the weather was fantastic, partially cloudy with light breeze, the course was good (lovely views of KL at high points), the crowd and other runners were friendly and i performed to the best of my ability.
Bring on the half marathon in September! Can't wait for it! ;)

Stop walking, start running
I'm signed up to do the Pacsetters New Balance 15K run on Sunday. I'm wondering how on earth I am going to complete this? I haven't run more than 10K in the last 5 months and the most recent runs have consisted of 3-5 K short bursts at a slow speed (about 9.5K per hour).
I'm not doing the full marathon in June because I simply didn't have the time or dedication or focus to train, but I want to get back into the swing of my training. At least once I'm back in the UK and unemployed(!) I know i will be able to get up nice and early in the mornings and have a good run most days.
Well, have decided to go ahead with it anyway, and just take it slow and not worry about my timing for the following reasons:
- Guaranteed weight loss and tone
- Will not be working out for 3 weeks around Vietnam/ HK move to UK time so good opportunity for last blast before everything turns to mush
- I like running and a challenge
- My Shrub has signed us both up for a half marathon in London in September so a bit of training would be more than beneficial!
- It's at 7am so will be finished before the world is even awake
- Because it's fun! And I live for pain!!!
- I'm crazy
Can't wait for the massive greasy fry up or dim sum afterwards ;)

Discipline
Oh gosh, I am going ahead with something I know I probably shouldn't be going ahead with, but, I just can't turn down the challenge - i am bordering on agreeing to the KL marathon on the 28th June.
For the last two months I'd say on average I have run 15km (if that) a week, and as usual, despite cutting down my partying to non existence I still find myself looking absolutely exhausted everyday. Most of the time i have been so busy with work I've barely been able to make it to the gym and then when i do, I have a serious lack of energy.
But I really, really want to accomplish this dam marathon, so I'm going to put a training plan in place tomorrow evening - I have to look at running 20 - 40 KM per week, every week until the marathon in order to be able to complete it. Or so I'm told/ have read.
I just have to pass the pain threshold, cut down the weight training and concentrate on the running. I just wanna do it SO badly.
This means no more late Friday nights and early get ups EVERY Saturday in order to fit in one long run a week. And that means I have to run religiously AT LEAST twice a week. Sigh. Can I fit it in? Speaking of religiously it may mean that if I want to run more I may have to miss the odd church session (or go Saturday evenings) JUST so I can make time to have at least one lie in a week. Man, they say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but this may just kill me.
It's not like i have a busy schedule, but I do feel like the people around me don't realise how much training occupies my time and also, they don't seem to understand that I actually enjoy it. It's times like this when i wish I had just one friend who was into sport.
I'll let you know when I have decided. Actually I have already decided that I want to do it, I just don't want to let myself down by not completing it.
Now see this guy http://oldmanrunning.org/ is my hero - 73 and still running...!

Hhhhmmmm...
Something isn't right.
Mada went away for the weekend with friends and was back at work on Tuesday. I have seen him on msn three nights in a row whilst at the end of my day and he didn't say hi. He usually does first and i was so busy i didn't get a chance to say hi. On my way to the gym i sent him a hello text to see if he wanted to chat at the weekend and he sent me an EMAIL back. No "Katelin" and no kisses.
Something isn't right.
I also gained a kilo in two months.
That and the above, is enough to make anyone suicidal.

2009 and Beyond...
Well I have decided to train to do the Singapore Full Marathon on the 6th December 2009 - just under a year away.
I was discussing it with my PT last night and I told him I was serious about getting my arse in gear, changing my diet, doing more weight training on my legs (to strengthen my knees), and preparing to run a marathon and run it well.
My first target includes completing one half marathon every 6-8 weeks (whether it be competitive or in training) and reducing my time to 2 hours. Yikes! We're going to design a programme that's going to be flexible around my work but means I can train outdoors too (early morning rise on a Saturday then it would seem!)
I have asked my Sister to come over to Singapore and run it with me as her running speed is similar to mine, I'm hoping she'll agree. We did talk about doing the Flora London marathon in 2010 (Will be changed to Virgin Marathon after 2009 apparently) which she was up for but I'd really like to do a marathon next year. Fingers crossed she'll say yes, it would be awesome to cross the finish line with her.
In the meantime I'm feeling much more positive about the year ahead and thinking about all the opportunties that lie. I'm going to stop looking at this whole situation as a negative one but one of opportunity - I've got one year of being paid in a job that I don't like left, BUT that gives me one whole year to search for the "perfect" job in the meantime or jobs plural.
I was thinking... if I could get the right Visas I could have so much fun....
For example:
- Teach part time in an International School (Get to work with kids)
- Unpaid weekend position with BFM (Get to work in Media)
- Freelance GX Instructor (Get to work in Fitness)
Could you imagine? Juggle all three - I'd have the dream combination.... no money... but who cares... I'd be living the dream! (Haha) let's see what I can do hu?
Wow, 2009 is gonna be one heck of a challenge. And that's just the planning phase - 2010 is when it's all going to change. That's if... something doesn't happen in the meantime which takes me in a different direction, which inevitably, looking at my life to date, will!

Wahoooo I did it!
I did it! I did it! I did it!
Distance: 21.2km Half Marathon
Where: Singapore Island
Time: 2 hours 28 minutes and 35 seconds
Position: 538th out of 3,044 women
Pain Factor: Most excruciating body pain yet (ranking higher than Mount Kinabalu epidemic)
Enjoyment Factor: positively 10/10
Would I do it again: Yes 100% BRING ON THE FULL MARATHON!

In the early hours of Sunday 7th December I woke from a restless 5 hour sleep to sound of my alarm belting out in my ear at the ungodly hour of 04.45am. I jumped out of bed and into the shower to try and wake myself up from my half awake/ half asleep/ semi dream/ coma. Recklessly shaking H to “get up, lazy bum”, gulped down a banana and 500ml of water and headed out into the blackness, bumping into thousands of zombies all dressed very similarly to myself. I was nervous but excited all the same, this is THE big day I had been working towards since before I knew it. I thought back to February when I thought running for 6 minutes was an achievement… those days were long gone.
As we made our way to the start line I moaned to H that I needed to pee… again… for the millionth time. I really don’t drink much fluid so the last few days were really taken its toll on my poor weak bladder, so we queued for the porta-loo with what seemed like 49,999 other racers. Eventually I got my good luck hug and I headed for the start line. I was stumped at about 150 metres short! But I was there, nevertheless.
The total number of people competing in the Full marathon, half marathon and 10K was 50,000 compared to the first race in 2002 which had a measly 2,665 competitors – crazy!
The music was pumping over the speakers, my adrenalin was high and the final minute countdown began I focused my energy, switched on my I pod, took a deep breath and begun.
The first 5K was a breeze, I concentrated on running at my all time slowest, but was surprised when I got to 5K and had already been running for well over 45 minutes, I really needed to up my pace if I wanted to make my 2.5 hour target. I was thankful I had taken the Imodium before the race, it certainly worked (and I wasn’t constipated afterwards) but all that water played havoc with my bladder! As I resisted the temptation to stop and take a pee (Paula Radcliff style) it eventually evaporated into seemingly salty sweat – nice! As I speeded up over the bridge I heard my name being called and H waving from the side line, I gave him a smile and a wave for the camera and continued on. The race went smoothly with no real comments at this time to make. But as I reached 12K I started to feel the pressure. I noticed a guy had been running very close to me for about 1km. Eventually I pulled out one side of my headphone and asked if he was pacesetting himself against me. He sheepishly smiled and said yes and I told him to at least be polite and introduce himself then! We exchanged names, shook hands and kept in line with each other for about 6K. I’ve never ran with anyone before. At first I felt kinda awkward but eventually it felt really comfortable having someone weave in and out through the slower runners and help keep my pace. When we passed water stations we nodded to one another agreeing whether to pause or not and every now and then he passed me some Energy gel, which I declined but was appreciative of. At our last water stop I quickly asked him what his target time was, he said 3 hours and I suddenly thought to myself, I might be helping him but he is a hindrance to my speed. As he continued to fall behind me (despite my gau ya’s! And lei lei’s!) he told me to go on without him (was comical, like something out of a movie “Forget about me! Save yourself la!” We laughed and I went off ahead. Each man for them self in a race I guess. In a selfish way I’m glad running isn’t a team effort, I honestly think it was the first time in my life I’ve ever felt “fuck it” – I dumped him and headed on alone.
By this point I’d hit the last few K and I was struggling, I pulled over for the first time and stopped for about a minute, stretching out the unbelievable cramp up the backs of my legs and retching up bile on the side of the road. I quickly downed some 100 Plus, grunted, spat and picked up my speed again, passing people from the start who had flown by me and were now limping and catching up with the comfortable, steady runners. The supporters began to grow and thankfully I saw outstretched hands full of deep heat. I swiped at them with my sweaty palms and smeared the paste all over my kness and hamstrings and ran simultaneously (I’m talented I know) – note to self, do not rub sweat out of your eye when you have just rubbed deep heat into your leg – it burns!!!
The last K I nearly, oh SO nearly fell into a walk, the pain was absolutely unbelievable, I cannot express in words. Pure pure agony. But I had promised myself that whatever happened I would not walk. WOULD NOT dammit! I nearly shed a tear but once again I pushed myself back into the sprint. I never and I mean NEVER fail myself. At 500 metres I looked down at my watch, I had 4 minutes left if I wanted to get there in under my target time so I bolted like a rocket and ran down the 100 metres to the speakers playing Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” – perfect!
As I crossed the finish line I did a double jump in the air with pure ecstasy and also to ensure my Championchip (hooked to my trainer)registered my time and then gasped heavily half a dozen times. As I leant forward I had to steady myself and then literally limped to the finishers tent to collect my medal. It was over, I did it. But I couldn’t smile, I was concentrating on not dying until AFTER I picked up my medal.
Shortly after H appeared out of nowhere giving me a massive hug I was soaked to the bone and I stood there in my sports bra and pro runners smiling with exhausted glee as he snapped my photo with my big fat chunky medal. He was so, so proud of me and I was even more so of myself, it was an awesome feeling.
As I downed another bottle of water and another bottle of 100 plus I hobbled back to the hotel for some well earned rest, a hot shower and then met H and a friend for brunch which was a carb fest! Later I passed out for a well deserved power nap and then we partied (or rather I sat on a stall and danced with my upper body) until 4am. Then we went for yummy hawker food before passing out until the next morning.
When I eventually got back to KL last night I lay in my bath bubble bath, my body was aching soooo bad and my throat was very tender and voice grainy, and then had thorough enjoyment at poking my massive blister (yup there was 1 at about 17K onwards but it wasn’t too much of a hindrance) with a needle (it was lovely and juicy!) and finally, fell into a deep dreamless sleep at 8.30pm despite the offer of a well cooked meal at a friend’s place.
This morning I woke to slightly less pain (or perhaps I’ve just got use to everywhere feeling bruised) an extremely sore throat, a chesty feeling, looking “stoned” (according to Bombies who told me this over lunch ) and pure “ergh”. It was 6.30am. Time for work! YAY! (not).
But my God was it worth it. I’d do it all again in an instant! Except… I think I need just a teeny, weeny bit more rest. So I’m off to sleep, with my lem-sip and hot water bottle – I’m running a temperature now… but at least my body is lying on a comfy bed wrapped in luscious sheets and cuddling a teddy bear.
Until the marathon… I salute myself! Good night!

Good night!

2 days, 6 hrs, 18 mins & 2 secs to go...
Wow, I can't believe it... only 3 more sleeps until I take on the Singapore Half Marathon. I'm shocked at how quickly it has come around! Where has the year gone?
I have been training a lot, but if I'm honest with myself, I could have pushed myself substantially further. It sounds like such a lame excuse but I just haven't had the time lately to fit any more training into my weeks.
I usually work out 2-3 times per week (either cardio or weights) and trying to do a long run every Saturday - I only managed to fit 4 in over the last two months). The last couple of weeks I have been so preoccupied, I hope that my training and the power of inner strength (the mind) can pull me through.
I'm really super excited (bring it on!) although nervous at the same time, this will be my biggest physical challenge yet (although comparable to climbing Mount Kinabalu which was, in a nutshell, horrific!) at least this time I'll be in my comfy Adi-Zero's which are like the dream running shoe. SO comfy... but ha, we shall see on the day, they have only ever run about 15K! Please don't let me down pretty shoes! hehe.
I'm flying to Singapore on Saturday morning, although I wish I was taking the bus, logically I would be getting more rest as less waiting around at airports etc, but never mind. Once I arrive I will check into the hotel and then go and register for the race. Which reminds me, I need to check my blood type group in case of emergency - eek!
I am meeting H in the late afternoon, he is coming to Singapore from HK especially to cheer me on and party after together. I can't wait to see him, it's been about 6 months and despite the fact that we email each other nearly everyday I feel like we have a whole lot to catch up on.
H is going to see a clairvoyant whilst there who was recommended to him by our mutual friend. He asked me if I wanted to go but I have chosen not to, as intrigued as I am about what the future holds for me, I believe that life is all about the unpredictable and a daily test of our personality (strengths and weaknesses) to see how we will handle it. So I have said no, despite an overwhelming temptation, I must not. I believe as well that if someone imprints a thought into your mind, even if you forget about it, it is always there, hovering behind another thought and I feel will ultimately have an effect on a decision that you make. Does that make sense?
Although, perhaps I should just pop my head in and ask if the spirits foresee me completing the half marathon in one piece - hehe just kidding.
Last training session tonight, think of me at 06.30am on Sunday morning!
Boleh! Boleh!

Fun At The Circus
I was emailing H first thing this morning, telling him what I'd been up to lately.
Work has been really demanding and I am currently going through a "OMG I hate my job" phase (it comes and goes every month or so, lasts about a week etc, no big deal).
One of the reasons I find it hard is because I find it difficult to switch off. Even when I met Bombies for lunch yesterday I found myself very distracted and hard to concentrate on the conversation just because thoughts were whizzing through my mind of what I need to do or how I am going to do something.
Last night I needed to get out of the office quick smart to beat the traffic as I only have limited days in which I can train as my recovery after a big run is about 2days. I knew if I didn't run tonight I would miss out on a session, thus delaying my progress.
As I left the office I was really stressed as I hadn't done half the things I wanted to. But as soon as I was running, I forgot all about it. One of the reasons why I love running so much is that it completely clears my mind. No matter how exhausted I am (mentally or physically) running completely rejuvenates my mind, body and soul. I sleep like a baby pretty much every night because of it. It is my only stress relief at the moment (Tell me again why I quit smoking? Gargh!)
I spent three hours at the gym last night, I ran for an hour and a half (my knees really hurt today, despite the fact that I sat with ice on them afterwards, am taking cod liver oil and anti inflammatory) and then after a short break trained with my PT for over an hour on upper body and abs. To say I ache is an understatement.
He weighed me in at 56K AGAIN - why can't I get down to my target of 54K?? He said it's because I refuse to compromise my diet - it's true. I'd rather be 2K over my target weight and eat whatever the hell I want than be at my target but deprive myself of lattes, pizza, ben & jerrys, magi mee, laksa.. oh the list goes on. I explained to my PT, you know, my body isn't designed this way. I am supposed to be FAT. This is not my "natural" shape. He told me I should thank God for that, I was like eh? Why? He was a bit inconsiderate giving me the "fat" gene. He said I should thank Him for giving me the motivation to work out so hard. I said no, I thank my company for paying me enough that I can afford YOU to motivate me!! haha.
Anyway, what I'm really blogging about is how hard it is to make time in our lives for everything we want.
Last month I had to juggle:
work, sport, love, social
Now I am just juggling:
work, sport, social
But once I start working at the radio I will have to juggle:
work, sport, hobby, social
But I also would like 2009 to include
work, sport, hobby, social and love
My question is this - if I managed to fit work, sport, social and love in my life before, how is it that I am struggling with just work, sport and social now? And now I want to add hobby - it should equate to that of my lifestyle last month - yet I see it impossible that I will be able to balance so much.
Is it possible that ten years from now I could have work, sport, hobby, social, love and CHILDREN?? hahaha - impossible! Surely!
So my point is this. Hu. I actually don't think I have a point. But I think what I'm saying is that everybody adjusts themselves to fit the life style they truly desire-if you want to have a fulfilled life you just HAVE to make it work.
No matter how stressed I get trying to balance everything I am a person who needs to be continuously occupied. My MD in the UK has a motto: "Stress is good". I use to hate it when she said it but I realised that I actually perform better as a person under pressure/ demand/ time constraint/ target. Well, sometimes. Therefore, I will take on the impossible.
Because, all work and no play makes Jack a very dull boy.
It also makes Bubs a very dull girl.

Pang Sai Problems
I luuurve our UK Medical Advisor for WR. I emailed him yesterday about my "pang sai when running" problem as he is a marathon runner too. He said it's very common and some runners even carry tissue with them - lol!
Then he gave me the perfect solution - 1 hour before the run, take Imodium. Why on earth didn't I think of this before?? He said many pro runners do it before a long distant race and that it will give me a temporary fix until the run is over. Fab, that solves that problem then!
Look how sweet he was with all my questions and wonderingments...
Me...
My training went OK on Saturday but I had to stop and take a break after about 12 K as I got really bad stomach pain and had to go to the toilet. Sorry to be graphic! That seems to happen every now and then - is that normal? I hope it doesn't happen on the day (otherwise I'll have to do a Paula Radcliff!)
Also three questions:1) I sometimes get pins and needles in my foot after about 30-40 mins, only way to get rid of it is to stop. Why does this happen how can you avoid it?2) Why does my right hip constantly ache after a long training session?3) what is good to take for weak joints - ankle and knees hurt! cod liver oil? Will update you again next week! only 4 weeks to go argh!
His Reply:
Perfectly normal to have to ‘rush to the bushes’ – loads of runners take toilet paper with them ! Should settle as you get more long distance fitness, can try taking X1 immodium (loperamide before a long run)
1)Pins and needles means pressure on a nerve.. Any tight spots on your running shoes ? Back pain ? In general if it goes away don’t worry – have you tried running through it ?
2)Because it is unused to prolonged exercise – remember you are re-training your whole body here and it will take time. Run on grass when possible. Are your running shoes good – should be changed every 12 months (I never have though !!) If it persists you should get some professional advice.
3)Your joints aren’t weak !!! You are just giving them a battering...not surprising they ache. Cod liver oil, glucosamine fine but aches should go away as your endurance increases and your body gets used to the new demands you are placing on it !
Just keeping doing it – 12k is amazing achievement !
On the contrary I seem to have more and more problems with my day to day digestion since I quit smoking. Things aren't.. how to say ah...? So I took Senekot last night to get things "moving"- OMG never again, I was half an hour late to work this morning because I couldn't get off the darn toilet! Haha!
Oh the trials and tribulations of my day to day living!
